Publish

Pub•lish v. to produce a book and make it available for sale to the public.

Of course there are other forms of publish; you can be published in a magazine, etc, but for our purposes, this is publish. At Red Horseshoe Books, we work with you to “self-publish”. The book belongs to you; you are the publisher.

What is self-publishing?

It is an author who has written something he believes in, so he works with someone who can help produce and publish his book himself. He is investing in his own intellectual property. Every book published is a business venture because you are paying to produce a quality product which you plan to sell to as many people as possible to make a profit on your investment.

This is an offset press, your best friend.

That’s why the offset press is your best friend. It is designed to print high volume and that’s what gets your cost each down and makes your profit better. Though some people want to print just a few books to try to get their cost down, that actually hurts them and it’s not really how publishing works. We understand that in some cases, it is the right thing to do for your unique purposes; maybe you only need a few books.

There is “market research” you can do to see how much interest there is in your subject before you invest. If you see there is enough interest to make it a good risk, then you start to promote your book even before it becomes available for purchase. We work with a network of editors, illustrators, photographers and printers to bring quality to your book. We explain how this industry works so you understand the potential of your investment and it can be great! We also give you a book promotion strategy so you know how to get the word out that your book is available. There is no guarantee of sales no matter how you do it, but you have as good a chance as anyone! People can choose to buy or not buy.

We are listening to you about what you have in mind for your book. You could be doing a cook-book that you hope will be sold around the world, or you could be collecting family recipes along with some photos to make sure they are passed down in your family and cherished. Those two books would have a completely different approach.

We are consulting with you about the potential of your book. You may have a story that you think should be in print. We are thinking of how many people may be interested in that story and whether you can make it relevant to a wider readership. A lot more people than you imagine may benefit from your experience. Or maybe you don’t want more readers! Again, maybe this is just for your family and friends. Just a note here; that’s a pretty expensive venture. The design of the book costs the same if you do it just for your family or if you sell thousands of copies, so don’t be shocked at that. That’s why this is called “publishing”; it’s to be sold to get your money back. You can certainly choose not to do that, but just wanted you to understand how that works. We’ve had several authors who wrote just for their families but they understood the cost and that’s what they wanted to do. So your initial question should be, are there many people who would want to read my book? Is this an idea worth investing in? If you decide it is, go for it!!! We are here to help you! We have ideas to increase the value of your book. Whatever kind of book you are looking to publish has a few things that can “make it more”. You may have a story that would be enhanced by illustrations of one sort or another. Illustrations if done well, appeal to the emotions in a subtle way. Or maybe it needs photographs. A history book may look even better with black and white photos that match the era you are talking about. But then again, you could be working on a “coffee-table book” with big beautiful full color photos or illustrations. Every book has its “just right”. We can have that conversation.

The dimensions and the binding need to match the purpose of your book.

The cover design, the title, the sub-title all communicate with your reader before they even open the book. We do judge a book by the cover, so that is something we pay careful attention to.

Everything we do is custom.

If this sounds good to you, fill out the contact page and we’ll set up a time for a phone call. Look forward to hearing about your book!
